Iconic LA Dive Bar Faces Closure, Seeks Community Support
Ye Rustic Inn in Los Feliz is at risk of closing due to an expiring lease and the planned removal of its outdoor patio, prompting an urgent plea to patrons.
Ye Rustic Inn, a long-standing bar in Los Angeles' Los Feliz neighborhood, is facing an uncertain future, with its lease set to expire in December and its popular outdoor patio slated for removal. The bar's owner is appealing to the community for support as rumors of its potential closure circulate.
Owner Susan Wood stated that negotiations with the landlord for a lease renewal have been difficult, with the landlord citing insurance company concerns for the planned removal of the outdoor space. Wood, who has owned the establishment since 1999, expressed concern about potential layoffs before the holiday season.
The bar took to social media to announce the situation, writing, "To our Los Feliz community and lovers of Ye Rustic Inn, we need you. Our outdoor space is scheduled to be removed on Monday and our lease is also looking at an uncertain future. We need our community’s support."
The establishment, known for its unpretentious atmosphere and famous wings, has been a neighborhood fixture since the 1970s. It served as a more casual alternative to pricier establishments in the trendy area. The bar's staff emphasized its importance to the community, stating, "While Rustic may just be a bar to some… to others it is a place to gather, their job, and where some of their best memories are held. It’s a Los Angeles institution and the neighborhood wouldn’t be the same without it."
Wood has organized a "circle of hope and unity" gathering for Wednesday night, encouraging supporters to demonstrate the bar's significance to its patrons and employees in the hope of opening a line of communication with the landlord.
While the bar has not formally announced a permanent closure, the removal of its outdoor space, scheduled for November 2, does not automatically mean the end of indoor operations. The situation highlights broader tensions between small business owners and commercial landlords in Los Angeles, with reports of disputes over rent increases, repairs, and lease renewals in other parts of the city.
