Iconic Hollywood Cinerama Dome Undergoes Retro Makeover Ahead of Reopening

The historic Cinerama Dome in Hollywood is set to reopen with a renewed aesthetic that draws inspiration from its original 1963 design. Alamo Drafthouse, which acquired the iconic cinema, has released renderings showcasing a retro-inspired interior featuring wood-paneled walls, gold-toned accents, and rust-colored carpeting.

The renovation aims to preserve the vintage charm that has made the landmark a staple of Hollywood. Key elements of the original design, such as the distinctive dome shape and the red-and-blue Pacific's Cinerama Theatre sign, are being maintained. The interior design specifically reflects the aesthetics of the theater's early years, with details like a hexagonal carpet pattern visible in the renderings.

The legendary venue closed its doors in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the bankruptcy of Pacific Theatres. The property was subsequently sold by the family of its founder, William R. Forman. Both AMC and Amazon MGM reportedly considered acquiring the theater but ultimately passed on the opportunity.

Before its closure, the Cinerama Dome was a prominent location for movie premieres and frequently appeared in film and television. Its notable screen credits include "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," " and "Frost/Nixon," among others.

Alamo Drafthouse has cautioned that the released design renderings are illustrative and subject to change, meaning the final appearance of the renovated theater may differ. The company purchased the theater chain from Sony in 2024.
