ICE Shooting in Austin Sparks Calls for Transparency
A Democratic congressman is demanding answers and the release of body camera footage after a reported ICE shooting during an operation in Austin.
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Austin, Texas, has resulted in a reported shooting, prompting calls for an independent investigation and the immediate release of body camera footage.
Rep. Greg Casar, D-Texas, stated on social media that ICE shot an individual during the operation on Sunday morning. He expressed concern over past incidents involving ICE, writing, "Over and over, ICE has shot people and then lied about what happened. We will demand truth, transparency and accountability."
City officials, including Mayor Kirk Watson, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, and Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz, were scheduled to address the incident at a news conference Sunday afternoon. The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed ICE was conducting an investigation in the area but did not immediately provide details on whether anyone was shot or injured.
The incident occurs amid broader scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement operations nationwide. Tensions have been high, marked by protests and clashes outside detention centers, as well as fatal encounters involving federal agents in other cities.
Previous incidents, such as a fatal shooting in Houston where ICE agents were reportedly not wearing body cameras, have also raised concerns about accountability and transparency. Another incident in Minneapolis involved the fatal shooting of a woman by an ICE agent and a separate fatal shooting by a Border Patrol agent.
Fox News Digital has reached out to ICE, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Austin Police Department for further information.
