U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against Akbor Miah, a Bangladeshi national accused of illegal entry and charged with the first-degree murder of his sister-in-law in Lake County, Florida. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is requesting that Florida officials transfer Miah into federal custody upon the conclusion of his state criminal proceedings.

Miah, who authorities say also used the alias Shahidul Islam, is accused of fatally shooting Monica Islam on May 2, 2025. Islam disappeared after leaving her job at a convenience store where she worked with Miah. She was later found dead from a gunshot wound.

Prosecutors allege that evidence, including DNA from Miah's vehicle, a bullet found in the passenger door, and shattered window glass, links him to the killing. Internet searches conducted by Miah on the morning of the incident are also cited by investigators.

According to DHS, Miah first entered the U.S. in 2016 and was ordered removed in 2018. He was deported to Bangladesh in January 2019, during the Trump administration, but authorities state he illegally re-entered the U.S. and was released by the Biden administration on March 19, 2022.

Following the alleged murder, Miah is said to have fled to New York before being apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service and extradited back to Florida. DHS acting assistant secretary Lauren Bis stated that ICE lodged the detainer to ensure Miah faces immigration enforcement after any sentence imposed in the murder case, preventing him from being released back into the country.
