U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) intends to purchase robot dogs valued at up to $2 million, according to a federal procurement notice. The agency plans to use the Boston Dynamics SPOT Robots to support public safety and law enforcement by providing a remotely operated robotic capability for inspection, situational awareness, and hazard assessment in environments that may pose risks to personnel.

The technology is also utilized by other agencies, including the Secret Service, which had its robotic dogs seen patrolling Mar-A-Lago in viral social media videos in 2024. Police departments across the country also employ these robots.

The robots are equipped with 360-degree cameras and can operate doors. While they cannot attack like traditional police dogs, they can be fitted with extendable arms. In 2023, the Los Angeles Police Department showcased the device examining a crime scene for potential explosives and firearms.

The procurement notice specifically states that the robotic dogs will aid in securing the border and enhancing infrastructure security. The notice further indicated that this robotic capability would improve officer safety, support informed operational decision-making, and augment the Department of Homeland Security's ability to respond to incidents in dangerous, confined, unstable, or difficult-to-access areas.

This planned acquisition follows the Department of Homeland Security's approval of $16 million in spending for ICE to acquire electric shock gloves for its officers nationwide.
