Federal immigration officers were involved in a fatal shooting in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday. The identity of the deceased individual has not yet been released.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing flashing lights from an unmarked Ford Explorer at an intersection shortly before 7:20 a.m. One witness told the Biddeford Gazette that at least two officers surrounded a white sedan and were yelling loudly before multiple gunshots were heard. Another witness speaking to the Portland Press Herald stated they heard gunshots and saw officers pulling a man from his vehicle. The man, identified by witness Daniel Boucher as bleeding profusely from the head, reportedly said, "I tried to stop." Boucher told the Press Herald that he believed he watched the man die at the scene.
Maine Governor Janet Mills released a statement acknowledging the incident, describing such events as "alarming and frightening." She confirmed that the Maine State Police are on the scene, cooperating with the Attorney General’s Office, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and federal officials to investigate the morning's events.
This shooting marks the ninth ICE-related fatality since the Trump administration took office, according to the Associated Press.
