An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer is being recognized by the Department of Homeland Security for his heroic actions in saving a driver injured in a collision outside Festus, Missouri. Officer Curtland Sawyer witnessed the crash on July 11 while driving home and immediately stopped to provide assistance.

The incident involved a vehicle colliding with a tractor-trailer. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Sawyer rushed to the scene and rendered life-saving medical care to the injured driver. His actions included applying a tourniquet to stop life-threatening bleeding. Sawyer remained with the driver until emergency medical technicians arrived to take over treatment.

Assistant Secretary for ICE Lauren Bis stated, "Officer Sawyer is a hero." She added, "Our officers are the best of the best. When they see someone in need, they don’t hesitate to spring to action to help."

This incident is one of several recent rescues highlighted by the Department of Homeland Security involving ICE officers. In a separate event last month, an ICE officer rescued a 6-year-old boy from a swimming pool in Pasco County, Florida, performing CPR. In another case in Milwaukee, ICE officers rescued a woman trapped in an overturned vehicle after a crash.
