U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has established a new tipline for the public to report suspected commercial driver's license (CDL) fraud. The announcement comes as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) intensifies efforts to identify and remove unqualified drivers, including illegal immigrants, from American roads. The tipline, which began Tuesday, is a direct response to a series of fatal crashes authorities attribute to individuals who allegedly obtained CDLs while in the country unlawfully.
Americans can report suspected CDL fraud by calling 866-347-2423. DHS has highlighted several cases that underscore the administration's concerns. According to the department, an illegal immigrant from Haiti who had reportedly been granted a CDL by Massachusetts caused a crash in July that killed a Pennsylvania State Trooper.
In another incident in February, an illegal immigrant from Kyrgyzstan, who DHS stated had a commercial driver's license issued by Pennsylvania, allegedly caused a head-on collision that resulted in four fatalities. ICE apprehended the individual that same month. Additionally, DHS cited a November 2025 incident in Oregon where an illegal immigrant from India, who reportedly held a CDL from California, jackknifed a trailer, leading to the deaths of a newlywed couple. This individual was arrested by ICE in April 2026. In Florida, an illegal immigrant from India allegedly caused a crash in August 2025 that killed three people after making an illegal U-turn, with DHS noting that California had issued a CDL to this individual.
"Too many American lives have been lost or permanently changed because illegal aliens who have no business being on our roads have been granted CDLs," stated DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. "ICE and our federal partners, including the Department of Transportation, will be cracking down on CDL fraud so that not one more American life is lost to a reckless illegal alien behind the wheel of a semi-truck. You can help save American lives and make our roads safer by dialing ICE’s new CDL fraud tipline today."
The tipline is part of a broader federal operation targeting fraud and unqualified drivers in the commercial trucking industry. In August, DHS reported that a three-day sweep, part of Operation Highway Shield, removed over 800 truckers from U.S. roads, including 51 individuals identified as illegal immigrants. Another operation in Oklahoma in October 2025 led to the arrest of 120 illegal immigrants, 91 of whom were reportedly operating commercial vehicles with CDLs. DHS and the Department of Transportation have also focused on fraudulent practices at CDL schools nationwide.
