The unmistakable jingle of the ice cream van has been voted the top nostalgic summer sound for Britons, according to a recent study. Nearly half of those surveyed agreed that the sound of the ice cream van's tune is one of their most cherished childhood memories.

Beyond the ice cream van, Britons identified other simple pleasures as key components of a happy summer. Nearly two-thirds expressed enjoyment in simple summer evenings spent in the garden, the scent of sunscreen, and playing games in arcades along the coast. A third of respondents also admitted that a favorite aspect of summer is complaining about the heat, despite waiting for warmer weather throughout the year.

The study, commissioned by Kinder Bueno Ice Cream, found that summer soundtracks also include the sounds of barbecues in neighbors' gardens, the yearly effort to inflate paddling pools, and the hum of lawnmowers. Thunderstorms that break the heat are also noted as a highlight.

While peace and quiet are typically valued, the summer season brings an acceptance of more ambient noise, including neighbors playing music. Pop, rock, and reggae emerged as the favored music genres for summer listening.

Rebecca Jakob, Senior Brand Manager for Kinder Bueno Ice Cream, commented on the findings, stating that British summers are often defined by small details. She noted that familiar smells, sounds, and rituals, such as hearing an ice cream van in the distance or catching the scent of a barbecue, can transport people back to happy memories. These simple moments, she added, contribute significantly to the season's special feel.

The survey also highlighted the growing importance of nostalgia, with over half of Britons admitting they yearn for their youth summers. A significant 63% reported that reminiscing about past summers leaves them feeling warm and happy.
