An ice cream vendor in Tonyrefail, Wales, has been the subject of a noise complaint due to the music played from his van. Mark Edwards, who has been serving the area for over two decades, received a warning from the Rhondda Cynon Taf council following a complaint about music being played after 8 p.m. He expressed surprise, stating that he had never encountered such an issue in his 20 years of service.
Edwards was informed by his employer that continuing to use the van's chimes after a certain hour could lead to a fine. In response, he developed an alternative approach to alert customers. He has arranged with his regular customers to sound his horn once in each street to signal his arrival, allowing them to come out and purchase ice cream. Edwards is committed to continuing his service, stating, "I'm not going to let one individual spoil it for everybody else."
The council confirmed that it received a noise complaint in June concerning music played after 8 p.m. and deemed it valid after an investigation. According to council regulations, ice cream van operators must cease using their chimes by 7 p.m. However, the council noted that this restriction does not prevent them from trading after that time. Edwards was issued a letter reminding him of these requirements, and the council considers the matter closed.
