ICE Arrests Guyanese National in NYC Wanted for 2015 Murder
Federal immigration officials apprehended a man in Queens who is accused of murder in Guyana and subsequently fled to the U.S.
Federal immigration officials have apprehended a 45-year-old Guyanese national in Queens, New York, who is wanted in his home country for a 2015 murder. The individual, identified as Kanand Ojha, was arrested on September 8 in Long Island City by the U.S. Marshals Service’s New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Ojha allegedly murdered Nephi Noel in Georgetown, Guyana, and then traveled to the United States approximately one week later. His lawful immigration status was revoked after officials became aware of an outstanding arrest warrant in his native country.
An alleged accomplice in the same murder case was convicted of manslaughter and received a 20-year prison sentence in 2017, ICE stated in a press release.
“New Yorkers are safer today because this accused murderer is no longer free to roam our neighborhoods,” said Kenneth Genalo, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations New York City Field Office Director. Genalo also commented on city policies that restrict local agencies from cooperating with ICE, suggesting they allow fugitives to embed themselves within communities.
