ICE Agents Injure U.S. Citizen in Botched Arrest Attempt

A U.S. citizen was left injured and bleeding on the side of a road in Evanston, Illinois, after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents mistook him for a fugitive and attempted to arrest him. The incident occurred Sunday morning when agents, searching for a fugitive with a Chicago address and an active warrant, encountered the man.

According to the Evanston Police Department, the agents believed the man was their target. When he refused to provide identification, the agents attempted to handcuff him. After realizing the individual was a U.S. citizen, they released him. Police responding to calls about an altercation observed blood on an agent's hands, who stated he was injured during the struggle to apprehend the man.

One witness, Ryan Garton, told The Associated Press that he saw agents pinning the Black man to the ground, with one agent's knee on his back. Garton reported hearing the man repeatedly state, "I'm a citizen, leave me alone." Around five bystanders yelled for the agent to stop. Garton observed handprint-shaped bloodstains on the man's shirt and noted swelling around his eye and abrasions on his face, consistent with being punched and ground into the pavement. The man told Garton he was on his way to a pharmacy to pick up a prescription when the encounter began.

Another witness, Michael Lipson, owner of a nearby store, also saw the man wrestled to the ground while asserting his U.S. citizenship. Lipson described the man's face as "badly messed up" and observed agents scattering papers from his wallet on the road before leaving. Lipson provided a sweatshirt for the injured man to rest on while Garton examined his injuries.

The U.S. citizen, whose identity has not been released, was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital for treatment of his injuries, which included reported damage to his head, neck, and teeth. Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss confirmed the man received treatment for minor injuries and stated that local authorities are investigating the incident. Biss also indicated the city would remain vigilant regarding federal activities.

A Department of Homeland Security statement confirmed that ICE officers encountered an individual who resembled the target of a "targeted enforcement operation." The statement claimed the individual was given "lawful commands but was not cooperative and refused to identify himself." According to the department, the officers "left the scene without further incident" after the man identified himself, and that their offer of assistance was refused.

The incident has drawn condemnation from local and state officials. U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois expressed disgust and outrage over the reports. The encounter also comes amid growing national scrutiny of ICE's practices. The agency recently announced a record number of arrests, with nearly 51,000 individuals apprehended in the previous month.

This event follows other controversial incidents involving immigration agents. On the same day in Austin, Texas, ICE agents shot and wounded a man. Reports indicate at least 10 people have died in encounters with immigration agents during the Trump administration's tenure, including U.S. citizens. These incidents have contributed to backlash against aggressive immigration enforcement tactics.
