ICE Agent Shoots Migrant in Austin, Igniting Protests

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and wounded a Venezuelan migrant in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, an incident that led to protests in the city. The shooting occurred shortly before 1 p.m. following a brief foot pursuit on the city's north side, according to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis.

The injured migrant, identified by his attorney as 28-year-old Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, sustained a gunshot wound to the torso. He is reported to be in serious but stable condition at a local hospital, said Austin Mayor Kirk Watson.

Sources within the Department of Homeland Security indicated that the injured individual is an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela with an existing order of removal. The exact circumstances leading up to the ICE operation and the subsequent shooting are still under preliminary investigation.

Mayor Watson expressed anger over the incident and criticized the federal agency, stating that while he was upset, he was "not surprised at all" by the actions of ICE, citing similar events in other cities. He called for transparency and a thorough investigation into the matter.

Garces Perez's immigration attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, told The New York Times that both she and the migrant's wife have been unable to see him and are unsure of his current location, whether he remains at the hospital or has been taken into ICE custody.

Dozens of protesters gathered at the scene shortly after the shooting, with some engaging in confrontations with authorities, according to reports. The incident has drawn comparisons to other recent fatal shootings involving ICE agents.

In July, ICE officers in Houston shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, during an operation. In the same month, Joan Sebastian Guerrero was fatally shot by authorities in Biddeford, Maine, after allegedly attempting to drive his car into ICE agents.
