U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during a traffic stop in Texas, an incident that occurred while agents were searching for a different individual, officials stated. The shooting has prompted protests and calls for an independent investigation from several members of Congress.
Four Democratic Representatives—Sylvia Garcia, Al Green, Lizzie Fletcher, and Christian Menefee—sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) asserting that this is not the first instance of ICE agents using excessive deadly force. They also referenced two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were reportedly killed by federal agents in Minneapolis in January.
The representatives criticized the DHS and ICE statements following Salgado's death, which they claimed echoed previous accounts, citing justifications such as evasion of arrest, weaponization of a vehicle, and self-defense.
In response to the shooting, the Mexican government announced its intention to file criminal complaints in the U.S. concerning the deaths of over a dozen of its citizens while in U.S. custody. Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco stated that 14 Mexicans have died in ICE custody and three more during ICE arrest operations. President Claudia Sheinbaum has instructed Velasco to pursue these complaints, aiming for the deaths to be investigated as criminal matters.
