Ian Wright Calls for 'Unprecedented' Punishment for Manchester City Financial Charges

Ian Wright has called for an "unprecedented punishment" against Manchester City, stating the club has engaged in "cheating on an industrial scale." The former England international's comments come after the Premier League found the club guilty of numerous financial breaches over a nine-season period.

Speaking to ITV Sport before England's match against Czechia, Wright described the situation as "quite surreal seeing it written down like that." He emphasized the need for a significant response from the league, noting, "Unprecedented punishment is required here. It's a massive day for the Premier League."

Wright also raised concerns about the potential fallout, anticipating a "very messy" situation. He alluded to the impact on rival clubs, particularly Liverpool, during their past title challenges, suggesting that the efforts of teams like Liverpool to compete might have been undermined. "In their real time, Liverpool were the team chasing them down. Look at what Jurgen Klopp went through to break them - it probably broke him," Wright commented.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, also present, acknowledged the damage to the Premier League's global brand. "It's very damaging for the league, the brand is huge all over the world, but for them to be caught cheating, they deserve that punishment," Keane stated. He added that while punishment is deserved, it is "not good for the league" and raised questions about the implications for current and past players involved.

The Premier League's charges, which Manchester City is expected to appeal, allege that the club made "sham" agreements to artificially inflate revenue and reduce operating costs. These practices allegedly occurred over a nine-year span during which the club secured eight trophies.
