Ian Jackson Returns to St. John's, Embraces Coach Pitino's Demands

Junior guard Ian Jackson has committed to returning to St. John's, citing his belief in coach Rick Pitino's system and his desire to embrace challenges. Jackson, who spoke with The Post's Steve Serby, emphasized his work ethic and dedication to improving his game.

"I don't run from a challenge. I don't run from the hard. I embrace the hard, I embrace the journey, I embrace the grind, and I believe in Coach," Jackson stated. He highlighted his commitment to putting in hours in the gym, often late at night, to chase greatness and continuously improve.

Jackson acknowledged that Pitino's coaching style, which he described as "tough love," was challenging but ultimately beneficial. "It's something not many people can handle or have experienced before, so for me, it was great. I embrace the hard, I embrace the difficult, and I kind of just went along with it." He added that understanding Pitino's methods and expectations has made the process easier.

PITINO'S MOTIVATION AND JACKSON'S LEADERSHIP

According to Jackson, Pitino's primary motivation is the "nothing's ever good enough" mentality, constantly pushing players to look for the next improvement. Jackson aims to embody this by leading his teammates, ensuring everyone is on the same page, and emphasizing that winning requires collective buy-in. "I got to be better, but I’m there for them. They look to me to lead them, that’s what I’m going to do," he said.

His focus for improvement this season includes increasing his steal numbers, though he expressed confidence in his three-point shooting. Jackson’s drive is fueled by his family and a fear of failure, which he uses as motivation to prepare diligently for every situation.

Jackson also shared his thoughts on playing for St. John's, a local responsibility he handles by "blocking it out." He trusts his work, his team, and his coach, and intends to compete fiercely.

PREPARING FOR THE SEASON

When asked about playing for Pitino, Jackson noted that the coach often uses examples of legendary players he has coached, such as Patrick Ewing and Mark Jackson, to illustrate points about playing the right way and prioritizing winning. Jackson described his on-court mentality as that of a competitor, willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory.

The biggest adversity he has overcome, he explained, was learning to adapt and make necessary changes after initial success in high school. He credits his growth to understanding the game better, including situational awareness and improving his teammates' performance.

Reflecting on his experience playing point guard last season, Jackson did not find it frustrating but rather a valuable learning opportunity that added versatility to his game. He described the atmosphere during Big East games at Madison Square Garden as "phenomenal," with fans providing crucial energy and support.

Jackson anticipates a competitive Big East conference this season and expressed optimism about his teammates, including Quinn Ellis, Tounde Yessoufou, Keyshawn Hall, Ruben Prey, Lefteris Liotopoulos, Theo Edema, and Zuby Ejiofor, highlighting their individual strengths and contributions.

Jackson also discussed his connection with NBA player Donovan Mitchell, stemming from shared training sessions. Mitchell's advice to always focus on improving one's game, regardless of location, has been impactful. While Jackson is unsure which NBA player he most resembles, he noted similarities to Tyrese Maxey's game.

Discussing his childhood in The Bronx, Jackson recalled playing in local parks and tournaments, describing the games as gritty and competitive. He also reminisced about winning a championship at Cardinal Hayes High School.

Looking ahead, Jackson aims for a successful season defined by winning as much as possible and daily improvement, with the team's ultimate goal being to achieve collective success without looking too far ahead. "I think the sky’s the limit," he said about the team's potential, citing the talent and experience of his teammates. His message to the fans is one of readiness to do whatever it takes to win.
