Hyundai Ioniq 5 Named First Electric Vehicle as Auto Express Used Car of the Year

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has made history by becoming the first electric vehicle to be named Auto Express's Used Car of the Year for 2026. The awards recognize used cars that excel in value, practicality, performance, and desirability.

Phil McNamara, editor-at-large of Auto Express, stated that the best used cars are not necessarily those with the largest badges or highest new-car price tags, but rather those that meet drivers' needs for low running costs, family-friendly space, or a premium experience at a sensible price.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5, a compact electric SUV first launched in 2021, was praised for its distinctive design, spacious and well-equipped interior, and engaging driving experience. Used models are now available at a fraction of their original price. With prices starting around £13,000, it offers an affordable entry into electric motoring. The model boasts a maximum range of 354 miles on a single charge.

"The Ioniq 5 is a brilliant all-rounder that shows just how good a used electric car can be," McNamara said. "With prices starting at little over £13,000, it makes a compelling case for going electric - and is a thoroughly deserving Used Car of the Year."

Top Five Used Cars for 2026

Following the Ioniq 5, the Renault Clio secured second place overall and was named Best Used Small Car. This supermini is recognized for combining compact dimensions with a mature driving experience, generous equipment, and efficient engine options, including a hybrid variant. Used three-year-old models typically range from £11,000 to £14,000.

Taking third place and winning Best Used Large SUV, the Volvo XC90 was lauded for its quiet luxury, plush interior, and seven-seater practicality. While new models start at £57,270, used versions offer significant savings, with prices beginning below £20,000. The XC90 is noted for its commanding driving position and spacious interior accommodating up to seven passengers.

The Polestar 4 came in fourth and also won Best Used Premium Electric Car. This electric coupe offers a range of 391 miles and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Judges appreciated its stylish design, build quality, and enjoyable driving dynamics, presenting it as an alternative to established executive EVs. Used Polestar 4 Coupes are available from around £31,000.

Rounding out the top five, the Dacia Jogger received accolades as Best Used Hybrid Car and Best Used Family Car. This seven-seater family car, known for its value, is available new from £18,995 and can be found used for under £10,000. Its blend of space, versatility, and affordability makes it a strong contender for budget-conscious families.

Expert Advice for Purchasing Used Cars

Auto Express also provided expert tips for buying a used car:

  • Look beyond the badge: Consider alternative brands or body styles for significant savings. For example, Vauxhall Astras are typically less expensive than equivalent Volkswagen Golfs.
  • Consider EVs: Used electric vehicles can offer good value, with lower running and servicing costs potentially providing further savings.
  • Find the depreciation sweet spot: Cars aged between two and five years often present a good balance of affordability and manageable running costs, as the steepest depreciation has already occurred.
  • Time your purchase smartly: Prices can fluctuate, and the end of the month, particularly March and September, can be opportune times for negotiation due to new registration plates and dealer sales targets.
  • Consider readily available models: Wider availability increases negotiation scope and allows for price comparison across different locations, though travel costs should be factored in.
  • Negotiate more than the price: If a price discount isn't possible, explore options for extras such as warranties, servicing, or fuel. Flexibility on finance interest rates may also be negotiable. Agree on the car's price first before discussing additional items.
