Joanna Wietrzyk, a 24-year-old Hyrox competitor from Australia, has announced her return to the fitness competition circuit. Wietrzyk is set to race in Hamburg, Germany, on Friday, marking her comeback after an incident at a September event in Beijing where she experienced severe bowel incontinence during a competition.
Reflection and Apology
In a social media announcement, Wietrzyk stated that she has spent the past two months reflecting on the event. "I just want to say that I’m truly, truly so sorry to everyone that I affected, whether they were spectators or participants out on that race floor for my decision to choose to continue to race," she said. She described the situation as "very hard to navigate" and "very confronting." Wietrzyk also expressed gratitude for the support she has received.
Elite Competition Return
Wietrzyk's upcoming participation will be in the Elite 15 series, an invitation-only competition designed for elite athletes aiming to qualify for the Hyrox World Championships. Top athletes in this series must secure a top 3 finish to earn a spot in the world championship.
The Beijing Incident
The incident in Beijing reportedly occurred after Wietrzyk contracted food poisoning. While competing, she suffered explosive diarrhea during the burpee broad jumps segment. Despite the situation, she continued racing, completing the remaining exercises, including another run, a seated row, a farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls. Photos and videos from the event showed fecal matter on her legs as she finished the course.
Chinese officials stated that staff promptly contained and disinfected the affected areas, replaced contaminated equipment, and cleaned the carpet post-event. However, some participants and spectators reported that the contamination was visible and affected the track and equipment, leading to some athletes falling.
Hyrox co-founder Moritz Fuerste acknowledged that organizers "made a mistake by not reacting immediately during the race" and that new rules and procedures have been implemented to prevent similar occurrences. Following the event, Wietrzyk had initially apologized and stated her intention to retroactively withdraw from the race and forfeit her points.
