HYROX Athlete Apologizes for Continuing Race After Mid-Competition Incident

Joanna Wietrzyk, an Australian HYROX competitor, has apologized for continuing a race after experiencing bowel incontinence mid-competition. Wietrzyk, 24, who holds a HYROX world record, stated that she made the wrong decision by not withdrawing from the event in Beijing last month, acknowledging she put other participants at risk.

Footage from the race showed Wietrzyk continuing with exercises, including burpees and carrying heavy bags, with excrement visible on her leg. The incident occurred while she was suffering from food poisoning. Organizers issued an apology at the time, but Wietrzyk initially opted not to express remorse, posting from a hospital bed afterward that "a win is a win."

In a recent Instagram video, Wietrzyk expressed her apologies to "everyone that I affected, whether they were spectators or participants out on that race floor for my decision to choose to continue to race." She explained that she needed time to reflect and process the event, stating, "I needed those days to reflect on it and process it."

Despite her initial stance, Wietrzyk now admits, "Yes, I did make the wrong decision but I don't believe I should have received such backlash and such scrutiny online. At the end of the day I'm only human."

The incident drew scrutiny from fellow competitors regarding hygiene and contamination. HYROX organizers stated that affected lanes were isolated, contaminated equipment was removed, and cleaning and carpet replacement took place overnight. They also pledged to implement rule changes.

Wietrzyk faced significant online abuse following the event, prompting HYROX to warn that individuals directing abuse or threats towards her would be banned from future events. Her coach, Chris Bayens, defended her, noting that decisions were made under pressure in a situation that could not have been reasonably prepared for. He urged the public to differentiate between legitimate discussion of the incident and personal attacks.

HYROX races combine eight one-kilometer runs with eight workout stations. Wietrzyk's next scheduled competition is the HYROX Elite Series opening race in Hamburg on October 30, 2026.
