Husband Supports Wife Accused of Murdering Son, Who Allegedly Emulated Lindsay Clancy Case

Corie Walsh, 40, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to charges of first-degree murder in the death of her two-year-old son, Barrett 'Bear' Walsh. Her husband, Michael Walsh, and other family members were present in the courtroom to support her during the brief hearing. Barrett was found hanged in the basement of their Illinois home on September 1.

Prosecutors allege that Walsh was obsessed with the case of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother who admitted to strangling her three children. During Walsh's court hearing, prosecutors revealed details from a group chat where Walsh reportedly discussed the Clancy case on the day of her son's death. They also claimed Walsh had intended to poison her husband.

Walsh's attorney, Andrea Lyon, who also represented Casey Anthony, stated that Walsh's family supports her and believes this is not indicative of her true character. The defense contends that Walsh was experiencing a "psychotic episode" at the time of her son's death. According to prosecutors, Walsh told police she killed Barrett because he was "the devil" and "the Antichrist."

The defense team has criticized the characterization of a "copycat theory" but acknowledged similarities to Clancy's defense, which cited postpartum psychosis and overmedication. Walsh's lawyers requested she be released to her mother for psychiatric treatment, but the judge ordered she remain in jail, with the State Attorney's Office responsible for ensuring she receives medical care.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Walsh had a drink and prescription bottles on a table, suggesting an attempt to poison her husband. However, the defense countered that Walsh texted friends on the day of the killing, stating, "It's manslaughter. Please help. I'm really freaking out."

Neighbors discovered the disturbing scene after two of Walsh's older children returned from school. Prosecutors also stated that Walsh used a "not particularly sharp" kitchen knife to cut her own wrists and thighs and was found in a bathtub.

The family shared a eulogy for Barrett that described him as a "joyful, funny, entertaining" and "rambunctious" son and a "cherished little brother." The obituary also noted that the toddler was deeply loving to his mother, despite the allegations against her.

Lindsay Clancy admitted to strangling her three children in January 2023 but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Her case ended in a mistrial as jurors were deliberating murder charges against her when Walsh allegedly sent the text message. Walsh's family was unable to attend her initial court hearing on September 8 due to Barrett's funeral.
