Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died Monday while undergoing treatment in a hospital in Zanzibar, the country’s vice president announced. Hassan had been receiving care for a heart condition.

Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced Hassan's death and offered condolences to the family. Arrangements are underway for his burial in Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous archipelago that is part of Tanzania. Hassan became Tanzania's first gentleman in 2021 when his wife assumed office as the country's first female president following the death of President John Magufuli.

The couple had four children, including a daughter who serves as a lawmaker. President Hassan is currently in her second term, having won the 2025 election with over 97% of the vote, a result where candidates from the two main opposition parties were barred from running.

Leaders from neighboring countries offered their sympathies. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed sorrow on behalf of his government and people, stating, "President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son." Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye also extended condolences to President Hassan and the Tanzanian people.
