James Conor Hanlon, 36, has broken his silence weeks after his wife, Brooke Haggerty Hanlon, 35, was found stabbed to death in their Chester Township, New Jersey home. Brooke Hanlon, a psychotherapist and mother of their young daughter, was discovered on June 6 in an upstairs bedroom.
"My heart is totally shattered," Conor Hanlon told the Daily Mail in an exclusive interview. When questioned about rumors suggesting his involvement in his wife's death, he responded, "Of course not," characterizing the event as "a tragedy." He declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation and refusing to discuss potential suspects.
Conor Hanlon had not been seen publicly in the weeks following his wife's murder, which fueled speculation within the affluent horse country community. However, he has recently been observed returning to the Pottersville Road home he shared with Brooke and has been staying there overnight. He has also been seen removing items from the garage and performing yard work.
Neighbors have expressed frustration and anxiety, stating that law enforcement has provided minimal information. "On one hand they said at the beginning that there was no danger to the public but then weeks later they came around and started asking questions," one resident told the Daily Mail. "What is going on? Nobody will tell us anything."
Brooke Hanlon, the daughter of a prominent pharmaceutical attorney, moved back to her hometown of Chester approximately two years ago with Conor, whom she met in his native Boston. The couple purchased their home in Chester Township in 2024. Prior to this, they had resided for a period at Brooke's parents' estate.
Released 911 audio captures Conor Hanlon's distressed call reporting the discovery of his wife's body. "I just found my wife!….She's not breathing or conscious," he can be heard shouting. "What the fk, what the fk! I need CPR. Oh my God there's a laceration in there!" He desperately pleaded for an ambulance, at times his cries rising in pitch. The 911 operator guided him through chest compressions, during which Hanlon can be heard exclaiming, "I got this, I got this, come on Brooke," while also remarking on her stab wounds and questioning what had happened.
The Morris County Prosecutor's Office has released few details about the investigation. Brooke Hanlon was a licensed professional counselor who specialized in working with children, adolescents, and families. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Wake Forest University and a master's in counseling psychology from Northeastern University. Conor Hanlon worked as a middle manager at a local construction company, though his current employment status is unclear.
Police maintained a constant presence outside the couple's home for at least two weeks following the discovery of Brooke's body. Both of their vehicles were observed parked in the driveway for several weeks after the incident. Conor Hanlon has been seen driving his car again for about a month, and was reportedly spotted in the Boston area last month.
