Husband Admits Killing Wife, Hiding Body in Freezer

David Barraclough, 46, walked into a police station on March 5 and confessed to killing his wife, Carolann, who he had beaten to death with a claw hammer two weeks prior. He subsequently bound her body with packaging tape, wrapped her in a duvet, and placed her in a chest freezer at their home in Horbury, West Yorkshire.

Following the murder on February 20, Barraclough sent text messages from his wife's phone to her daughter, falsely claiming Carolann was alive and recovering from an illness. He also searched online for escorts, joined the dating app Tinder, and spent his wife's money at local pubs.

Footage released by police shows Barraclough, heavily tattooed, softly stating he had "attempted suicide" and "killed my wife." He later told officers she was "in the freezer" and portrayed himself as a victim of years of domestic abuse, a claim rejected by the judge.

At Leeds Crown Court, Barraclough pleaded guilty to murder on the first day of his scheduled trial and was sentenced to a minimum term of 21 years and six months. Judge Andrew Stubbs KC described Barraclough's account of abuse as a "callous" and self-serving cover story.

"He spun a web of lies and deceit to explain his wife’s disappearance, telling his children and others that she was unwell and receiving treatment, providing updates and further explanations, and sending messages from her phone to perpetuate this fiction," the judge stated. "He even allowed her daughter to exchange messages with her mother's phone in the belief that she was communicating with her, rather than with him."

Barraclough also claimed his wife had attacked him with the hammer and he acted in self-defense, a defense rejected by the court.

Carolann Barraclough, 37, a mother of three, was last seen alive outside her home on February 19. The following day, she was described as looking "pale, miserable and terrified," while Barraclough appeared "really, really, really scary." Prosecutors stated Barraclough murdered his wife in a bedroom before leaving the house alone at 10:03 a.m. on February 20. A minute earlier, he had searched online for an escort.

Sarah Rowley, Carolann's sister, described her as "the bright light of our family." She added, "Her children were the centre of her world. She loved being a mum. The void of her absence is agonisingly loud."

Rowley also noted Barraclough's calculated actions to isolate Carolann: "It is incredibly painful to see how he targeted her loving and social nature. Slowly and calculatingly he isolated her from the people who loved her the most and created barriers to slowly stop us from seeing her or staying connected to her."

Barraclough refused to appear in the dock for his sentencing. New legislation, known as 'Olivia's law,' allows for defendants to be brought to court using reasonable force or jailed for not attending, though these powers are not yet in force.

Jill May, senior crown prosecutor for Yorkshire, commented, "David Barraclough tried to paint himself as a victim of domestic abuse who had no choice but to kill his wife and was heartbroken by what had happened. The evidence told a very different story."
