Hunter Schafer Discusses Undergoing Gender-Affirming Surgery
The 'Euphoria' star shared details about her experience with bottom surgery, which she underwent in December 2025.
Hunter Schafer, known for her role in "Euphoria," has revealed that she underwent bottom surgery in December 2025. In an interview with Elle magazine, published Monday, the 27-year-old actress described the gender-affirming operation as "amazing" and expressed her satisfaction with the procedure, stating, "I love it so much."
Schafer reflected on the complexities of queerness, noting the perceived tension between its theoretical aspects and its practical application in the real world. She explained that while she initially sought to align her previous body with her gender identity, the surgery ultimately proved to be the right decision for her. Schafer began her transition at the age of 14.
"For a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it," she told Elle. However, she now feels a clear affirmation of her gender identity, stating, "I’m a woman. I’m a girl."
Previously, in a 2024 interview with GQ magazine, Schafer expressed a desire not to be narrowly defined by her transgender identity, particularly regarding acting roles. "I don’t want to be [reduced to] that, and I find it ultimately demeaning to me and what I want to do," she said at the time. "Especially after high school, I was sick of talking about it. I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on."
However, Schafer indicated a potential shift in her perspective, telling Elle that she would be interested in starring in a "trans girl rom-com." She added, "I’ve been thinking about that for a while. I would like to make that happen."
