Hunter Biden has launched a cryptocurrency meme coin named $LAPTOP, an initiative that directly references the laptop that became a subject of political controversy. The project plans to allocate a portion of its tokens to individuals who lost money investing in the $TRUMP token, a digital currency linked to former President Donald Trump.

The $LAPTOP coin is set to launch on the Base blockchain network, operated by Coinbase. According to reports, the total supply of the coin will be 1 billion tokens. Biden and his co-founders are slated to receive nearly one-third of the total supply, with a six-month lock-up period before they can begin selling their allocation, which will be fully released over two years.

A significant feature of the $LAPTOP project is its plan to distribute approximately 20% of its tokens to investors who incurred losses on the $TRUMP token. This Trump-affiliated coin has seen substantial investor losses, reportedly trading significantly below its peak value. A July 2026 report indicated that nearly one million retail traders lost an estimated $3.8 billion on the $TRUMP token, with other analyses placing losses between $3.2 billion and $4.5 billion.

The $LAPTOP coin also includes a deflationary mechanism where up to 30% of its supply could be permanently destroyed, or 'burned,' if certain conditions are met. These conditions include events such as a Democrat winning the White House in 2028, Bitcoin reaching a new record high, or the $LAPTOP coin surpassing the fully diluted valuation of the $TRUMP coin. If these events do not occur within specified timeframes, the affected coins are intended to be donated to charity.

Additional allocations of the $LAPTOP coin are being reserved for Biden's Substack subscribers and individuals on a mailing list curated by video journalist Andrew Callaghan. The remaining tokens are earmarked for charitable causes and liquidity needs, including distributions to exchanges and market makers, as well as a foundation to cover project expenses.

Biden has expressed a favorable view of cryptocurrencies, describing decentralized digital currencies as the "inevitable future" in recent online posts. However, experts caution that meme coins, lacking intrinsic value, carry considerable risks for buyers due to their speculative nature and potential for rapid price fluctuations.

The emergence of the $LAPTOP coin comes six years after material from Hunter Biden's laptop first gained public attention during the 2020 presidential campaign. The contents of the laptop, including messages related to business dealings and personal information, were initially reported by The Post in October 2020. At the time, the story faced significant scrutiny, with some public figures suggesting it could be part of a disinformation campaign. Subsequent forensic analyses have authenticated numerous emails, and federal investigations have corroborated laptop data with independent sources.
