Hundreds Protest Data Centre Plans in Gwynedd

Hundreds of people gathered in Caernarfon to protest against plans for a new data centre in Gwynedd, citing concerns about its potential effects on the local area. Approximately 300 demonstrators participated in the rally, while a petition opposing the development has garnered nearly 15,000 signatures.

The proposed complex would be situated on a 101-acre site between Caernarfon and Y Felinheli. Developers, Canolfan Ddata Menai, assert that the project could generate over 900 jobs during its construction phase and an additional 200 permanent roles. They also stated that the proposals would transform and revitalize a long-derelict site.

However, opponents have voiced strong opposition. Ernest Dyson, a resident near the proposed location, described the plan as "basically the destruction of the most beautiful part of the Menai Strait." He emphasized the community's role as custodians of the area, suggesting a need to prioritize its preservation.

Protesters held placards highlighting their objections to the data centre's potential impact on the local landscape. The demonstration underscores the significant local resistance to the development.
