Hundreds of children in Peterborough are living in "bed poverty," according to a local charity that is working to address the issue. Care Zone, an organization part of the council's crisis resilience fund, provides essential items like food parcels and advice to families in need.

Last year, Care Zone distributed over 3,500 larger items and 425 smaller household goods. Of the 1,900 individuals who utilized their services, approximately 845 were children. The charity's warehouse is currently stocked with new mattresses intended for families facing these challenges.

Volunteers at Care Zone clean and repair donated furniture and other household items. They report seeing families housed in temporary accommodations where multiple children may share a single bed or sleep on the floor, often without adequate cooking facilities.

"Tackling bed poverty was a priority because of the impact it had on children's education," a representative from Care Zone stated. "For children in particular, a good night's sleep is really essential. By giving them a bed, they have a much better chance at doing better in school."

Individuals can donate items directly to Care Zone, and referrals to the service are typically made through organizations such as the local council or GPs. The charity aims to provide a stable and comfortable sleeping environment, recognizing its direct link to a child's well-being and academic success.
