Hundreds of Animals Found Dead, Malnourished at Southern California Cat Rescue

Authorities have seized over 500 cats and found nearly 120 cremated animal remains, including at least 28 dead cats in a freezer, at a Southern California nonprofit that advertised itself as a sanctuary for unwanted pets. The grim discovery was made during an animal welfare investigation at properties associated with Furget Me Not Purebred Cat Rescue in Pomona and Los Angeles County, including locations in Claremont and Upland.

Officials from the Inland Valley Humane Society & SPCA coordinated with the Upland Police Department to execute search warrants simultaneously, ensuring the safety of the animals involved.

The nonprofit's founder and operator, Ewa Hanna Konca, 59, had previously described the organization's mission as promoting "human & feline bonding" and decreasing the number of homeless and unwanted cats, with a stated "no kill policy."

However, investigations revealed a starkly different reality behind closed doors. Neighboring properties appeared unremarkable, with no outward signs of distress.

However, the following year saw a substantial decline, with revenue dropping by 77% compared to 2022. The organization's stated primary expenses were supplies and medical care.
