Human Remains Found in London Identified as Missing Mother of Three

Human remains discovered in Feltham, London, following a wildfire have been identified as those of Joanne Sheen, a mother of three who vanished in December 2019. The Metropolitan Police were alerted on August 12 after a member of the public found bones, believed to be between 25 and 45 years old, near Padstow Walk, an area affected by a recent blaze.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have taken over the murder investigation after the remains were confirmed as belonging to Ms. Sheen, 44. She was last seen on December 5, 2019, when she traveled from Fareham, Hampshire, to her home city of Southampton. Her family reported her missing in February 2020 after not hearing from her for several months.

On Thursday, a 56-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. He remains in police custody as inquiries continue. Detective Chief Inspector Toby Elcock of the major crime team stated that this is a significant development in a long and complex investigation, providing new lines of inquiry.

Ms. Sheen's death is being treated as murder. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has conducted extensive searches, taken over 300 statements, and investigated more than 4,000 lines of inquiry. Specialist teams have searched waterways and woodland around Southampton. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the discovery was made after a recent wildfire affected the land near Bedfont Lakes Country Park.

"While this tragic discovery is not the outcome Joanne's family, or any of us, had hoped for, we hope the identification of her remains can at least begin to provide some answers after many years of uncertainty," said Detective Chief Inspector Elcock. He appealed to the public for any information regarding Ms. Sheen's disappearance, her movements before she went missing, or how she came to be in Feltham, emphasizing that the passage of time does not diminish the importance of any details.

Crimestoppers has reinstated a £20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The family of Joanne Sheen has been kept informed of the investigation's progress and is being supported by officers.
