Human remains were discovered in the Grand Canyon on Monday during the search for Timothy Allen Smith, a hiker who disappeared weeks ago in deadly flash floods. The remains were found near Crystal Rapid on the Colorado River and have been transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office for identification.

Officials have not yet confirmed if the recovered remains belong to Smith, who was reported missing after the Aug. 29 floods. The severe flash flooding in the canyon resulted in the deaths of two other hikers: John Giusti, 46, and Brent Rosenkranz, 42, both from Granbury, Texas.

Emergency crews rescued approximately 80 individuals from the canyon during the flood event. The natural disaster caused significant damage to trails and infrastructure within the park.
