Human Remains Discovered in Lancaster Desert Sparks Homicide Investigation

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies have launched a homicide investigation following the discovery of human remains in a remote area of Lancaster, California. The remains were found Tuesday afternoon in the desert near 50th Street East and Avenue F.

Aerial footage showed investigators excavating a large hole on the property, which was littered with debris, RVs, and remnants of structures. Evidence markers were visible across the scene, and investigators appeared to be collecting items under a temporary canopy. Cadaver dogs were reportedly used to search the area.

"Based on the circumstances surrounding the discovery, the case is now being investigated as a homicide," a statement from the sheriff's office said. "Homicide investigators are in the early stages of investigating the scene."

Authorities have not released the identities of the deceased or further details, citing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

The discovery occurred in the vicinity where Ricky Allen Phillips, 61, was reported missing two weeks prior. Phillips was last seen on Aug. 30, 2026, in Lancaster. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department had classified him as an at-risk missing person. However, officials have not indicated whether Phillips is among the discovered remains or if his disappearance is connected to the homicide investigation.

Phillips is described as 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighing 230 pounds, with black hair and green eyes. His family had expressed concern for his well-being prior to his disappearance being publicized.
