Hugh Riminton Announces Departure from Channel Ten After 17 Years

Veteran news anchor Hugh Riminton announced on Wednesday that he will be stepping down from his role at Channel Ten's 10 News First, citing family reasons for his departure. The 65-year-old journalist expressed mixed emotions about leaving the network after 17 years, acknowledging he was "teary" over the decision.

In a note shared with Network Ten staff, Riminton stated his intention to support his son through his Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams and spend time with his father, who is approaching 98 years old. "Every hour is precious," he wrote, adding that he anticipates new projects emerging after this period.

Riminton, who began his career as a cadet reporter at age 17, reflected on his 48 years in daily news. "This reporter's life has given me the world," he stated, expressing gratitude for his extensive career. "I leave with nothing but gratitude for every hour of it."

He thanked his colleagues and friends at Ten for their support, saying, "There is no one among you I am not proud to work alongside." He also mentioned his ongoing discussions with VP News Martin White, humorously adding that his task for colleagues in the coming weeks is "not to make me teary."

Martin White, VP News at Network Ten, commended Riminton's contributions, describing him as "one of the finest journalists this country has produced – a reporter of integrity, intellect and humanity." White added that Riminton's work has informed Australians through significant national stories and that his presence in the newsroom has been a privilege.

"For 17 years at Network Ten, Hugh has been a trusted colleague, mentor and friend. We are deeply grateful for everything he has given to our audiences, our newsroom and the craft of journalism, and we wish him every happiness in what comes next," White said in a statement.

She highlighted his courageous, clear, and compassionate reporting, which earned him the trust of audiences and the respect of his peers.

McGarvey further noted that Riminton's impact extends beyond his reporting, having helped shape public understanding of major events and inspired future generations of reporters with his professionalism and commitment to truth. Riminton joined Network Ten in 2009 and has served in various roles, including evening news co-anchor, senior political correspondent, and national affairs editor during his tenure.
