Actor Hugh Laurie has publicly stated his opposition to transgender women competing in women's sports, announcing his support for WNBA player Sophie Cunningham. The comments came after Cunningham reiterated her stance against transgender athletes in women's sports, calling it "common sense" to protect young girls.

Laurie, known for his role as Dr. Gregory House, initially made a brief comment on X, formerly Twitter, regarding the biological height advantage in professional basketball. This prompted an exchange with comedian Graham Linehan, who criticized Laurie's initial indirect wording as "cowardly." Laurie responded directly, stating, "I don’t believe men should compete against women." He later clarified his support for Cunningham, writing, "And yes, I support Sophie Cunningham."

Linehan subsequently apologized for his reaction, and the exchange gained significant attention online, sparking debate. Comedian and commentator Tim Young commented that Laurie, due to his established career, is in a position where he "can't be canceled." Young suggested that financial considerations often influence public statements from performers, contrasting Laurie's established position with those who might fear repercussions.

Cunningham's co-host on her podcast, West Wilson, dismissed the debate surrounding transgender athletes as "borderline nonexistent."

The discussion around transgender athletes in women's sports has been a prominent issue in the WNBA, with Cunningham recently voicing her opinion that biological males should not compete against women and girls.
