How 'Deadliest Catch' Depicted Todd Meadows' Tragic Death

The Season 22 finale of Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" addressed the tragic death of 25-year-old deckhand Todd Meadows, who fell overboard on February 25. The episode aired on Friday and depicted the moments leading up to and following Meadows' fatal accident aboard the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady in the Bering Sea.

Showrunners opted not to display the actual moment of the fall. Instead, the broadcast featured the perspective of Captain Rick Shelford and the ship's crew. A warning that the content might be disturbing to viewers preceded the segment.

In a confessional interview recorded shortly before his death, Meadows spoke about the difficulties of the season, noting it had been one of the "rougher seasons for the boat." He expressed his commitment to the job, stating, "It’s been one of my dreams and goals to make it up here. That’s why I’m up here to make it and to try to support my family." He also expressed a strong desire to return to the boat if given the opportunity.

The episode included a FaceTime call where Meadows promised his son a salmon fishing trip upon his return home. His daughter's plea for him to "be safe" was also featured. Meadows assured his family he was being safe.

The broadcast then cut to the aftermath of the incident. Crew members heard screams, and upon realizing a man was overboard, Shelford immediately turned the boat around. The cameras followed the efforts to recover Meadows from the water. Off-camera, Shelford urged the crew to perform CPR while also contacting the Coast Guard. A producer later informed Shelford that Meadows had not survived.

A message on screen stated: "On February 25th, 2026, deckhand Todd Meadows went overboard. After six minutes and twenty-six seconds in the water, he was recovered unresponsive."

Captain Shelford posted on Facebook following Meadows' death, calling it "the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady on the Bering Sea." He described Meadows as the "newest member of our crew" who "quickly became family" and whose "love for fishing and his strong work ethic earned everyone’s respect right away."

Fellow deckhand Trey John Green III told Page Six in March that the waters were calm on the day of the accident, despite being just above freezing. Green stated that Meadows was "in the right place at the right time" and "doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing" when the incident occurred, adding that the circumstances remained unclear to him.

Meadows' mother had previously appealed to Discovery not to air footage of her son's death, and reports indicated the family was planning to file a wrongful death lawsuit. Meadows' cause of death was officially listed as "drowning with probable hypothermia" and "submersion of body in cold water."

A GoFundMe campaign established for Meadows' mother has recently seen increased donations following the episode's airing, nearing its $75,000 goal.
