A fatal shooting involving a federal immigration officer in Houston on Tuesday has brought the death toll during the Trump administration's immigration enforcement campaign to at least eight. The incident, which resulted in the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, is the first fatality reported amidst a recent acceleration of the administration's mass deportation efforts.

According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Salgado Araujo ignored commands and attempted to evade arrest during an enforcement operation. DHS officials stated that he tried to ram his vehicle into an agent, prompting the agent to fire in self-defense. Salgado Araujo died en route to the hospital. His family stated he was on his way to his construction job at the time of the incident.

Immigrant rights groups and some Democratic officials have called for an independent investigation into the shooting and the preservation of all related evidence. They pointed to previous cases where video footage has contradicted federal officers' accounts, although no immigration officers have been charged in those prior fatal encounters.

In March 2025, Ruben Ray Martinez, a 23-year-old U.S. citizen, was killed during a late-night traffic stop in Texas. This marked an early fatality during the nationwide immigration crackdown. DHS officials stated Martinez refused to exit his vehicle and "intentionally ran over" an agent, leading another agent to fire shots. Martinez died at a hospital, and the involved agent received treatment for a knee injury. However, Martinez's mother reported that investigators informed her of video evidence that contradicted the federal agents' account. Federal and state authorities have not commented on potential discrepancies.

Another incident occurred on January 24 in Minneapolis, where Border Patrol officer shot and killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and nurse. Federal authorities initially described Pretti as an armed agitator posing a threat, but bystander video appeared to show Pretti on the ground holding a cellphone when an officer fired. The video suggested an officer removed a gun from Pretti's waistband before the first shot. Pretti possessed a permit to carry a firearm. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized the federal officials' initial characterization of Pretti as "despicable."

On January 7, also in Minneapolis, an ICE officer fatally shot Renee Good, a U.S. citizen. Videos from the scene showed her car's wheels turning away from the officer, Jonathan Ross, when he opened fire. Trump administration officials defended Ross, asserting his life was endangered by the moving vehicle. The U.S. Justice Department declined to share information regarding the shooting with state authorities, leading to lawsuits from state and local officials seeking to halt immigration sweeps. Protesters at subsequent operations were met with tear gas and chemical irritants.

In suburban Chicago on September 12, ICE agents fatally shot Silverio Villegas González, a 38-year-old Mexican national, during a traffic stop. DHS officials claimed Villegas González, who had a history of reckless driving and was in the country illegally, evaded arrest and dragged an officer with his vehicle. The officer reportedly feared for his life and was hospitalized. However, local police videos showed the agent appearing uninjured and dismissing his injuries.

In southern California on July 10, Jaime Alanis, a 57-year-old laborer from Mexico, died two days after falling from a greenhouse roof during a raid at Glass House Farms. Officials stated Alanis was not in custody and not being pursued at the time of the fall. On August 14, a man identified as Roberto Carlos Montoya Valdez, 52, of Guatemala, died after being hit by an SUV while attempting to cross a freeway in southern California. Police reported ICE agents were conducting operations nearby, but DHS stated Montoya Valdez was not being pursued when he ran onto the freeway.

Further incidents include the death of Josué Castro Rivera, 24, of Honduras, who was struck by a pickup truck on a highway in Norfolk, Virginia, on October 23 while attempting to flee authorities during a traffic stop. DHS stated the stop was part of a "targeted, intelligence-based" operation and that Castro Rivera had "resisted heavily and fled."
