A gunman who indiscriminately fired on passing vehicles in Houston, injuring three people including a mother and her daughter, was shot by responding police officers on August 14, 2026. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. along Wayside Drive when officers were called to reports of a person shooting at cars.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a man with a firearm. Police commanded the suspect to drop the weapon. Three officers and a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety then opened fire on the man, who was struck multiple times and transported to a hospital. No law enforcement officers were injured.
A witness told KRIV-TV that the gunman was standing in the median and firing at vehicles without apparent regard for who was inside. "He didn’t care who was coming which way. He didn’t care who he was shooting at. He didn’t care if there were kids in the car," the witness stated.
Among the vehicles targeted was one carrying a mother and her daughter, both of whom sustained gunshot wounds. A third individual in a separate vehicle was also injured. An occupant in a third vehicle reportedly escaped unharmed. Images showed the rear window of a car shattered by gunfire.
Witnesses attempted to divert traffic away from the gunman. The identity of the suspect has not been released, and the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. The Houston Police Department and the Texas Rangers are leading the inquiry into the incident.
