House Speaker Mike Johnson has identified New Jersey's 7th Congressional District as a pivotal battleground in the upcoming elections, designating the race a "top three" priority for Republicans. The district, which includes former President Donald Trump's Bedminster golf course, is seen by the GOP as crucial for maintaining control of the House of Representatives and advancing Trump's policy goals.

Johnson emphasized the importance of the race during a rally for Rep. Tom Kean Jr., who is seeking a third term. "They're investing tons of money to try to take [Kean] down, but they are not going to be successful," Johnson stated, according to Fox News Digital. He highlighted that the district is a critical target for Democrats, who are backing former Navy helicopter pilot Rebecca Bennett.

The outcome of this election could significantly influence the political landscape for the latter half of a potential second Trump term. If Republicans retain the House, Johnson indicated the party has "aggressive" plans to address government spending and waste. Conversely, a Democratic victory in this district, and potentially the House, could hinder Trump's legislative agenda.

Kean expressed confidence in his re-election, citing his record as an effective legislator who has represented his constituents' needs. He contrasted himself with his opponent, whom he described as an "abject partisan" unlikely to work across the aisle. Kean also noted his legislative successes under both the Biden and Trump administrations.

Bennett's campaign spokesperson, Carly Jones, countered Kean's characterization, stating that Bennett is building a coalition of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans. Jones asserted that Bennett is inspired by her faith to serve the country and run for office.

The district has shown political volatility. Trump narrowly won the area by two points in 2024, but it flipped for Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill by the same margin in 2025. This dynamic makes it a key race for both parties.

Johnson also used the event to criticize what he described as a "Marxist-communist element" within the Democratic Party, suggesting it poses a challenge to foundational American principles. He argued that this perceived shift in the Democratic Party is being effectively communicated to voters.

Rep. Kean was notably absent from Congress and public view from March through June, later revealing he was undergoing treatment for depression. Upon his return, he introduced legislation aimed at improving access to mental healthcare. Bennett's campaign has questioned Kean's stock trading activities during his absence, with a spokesperson alleging he made millions from the market while not present in Congress.
