House Speaker Mike Johnson Warns French Riots Are a 'Chilling Warning' for America
Johnson draws parallels between ongoing unrest in France and the potential consequences of Democratic policies on immigration and governance.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has drawn a stark comparison between the violent riots currently occurring in France and the potential future of the United States, warning that the events abroad serve as a "chilling warning" for Americans. Johnson specifically linked the unrest in France to what he described as the socialist agenda of the Democratic Party, particularly concerning immigration policies.
In a statement posted on X, Johnson asserted that France is descending into chaos due to "open borders," a situation he believes could be mirrored in the U.S. if Democrats gain control in upcoming elections. He stated, "What we are witnessing is a chilling warning for all Americans of what happens if the radical Marxist insurgent left gets their way."
Johnson attributed the riots in France, in part, to what he characterized as lax regulations on illegal immigration, an issue that he noted was significant in Republican victories in the 2024 elections in the U.S. He further elaborated, "America is not merely in a battle of political ideologies — it’s a battle for the preservation of our civilization, our freedoms, and our way of life. If Democrats take back control, it will be open borders and criminal illegals overrunning our country, many of whom want to destroy it."
The nationwide protests in France, which saw over 500,000 participants in various cities and towns, were initially sparked by issues such as the high cost of living and education expenses. However, the demonstrations devolved into violence, with French authorities reporting 1,800 arrests across the country, including over 800 in Paris.
Visuals from France depicted widespread destruction, with centuries-old buildings damaged and reports of looting. French centrist officials have pointed to far-left groups as instigators of the violence. Some images from the protests showed protesters carrying Algerian, Palestinian, and Moroccan flags, which figures on the right have used to criticize France's immigration policies. Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the events in France represent the "progressive political agenda at its natural conclusion" and that a large welfare state combined with immigration from developing nations can lead to a collapse of social order.
