The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bipartisan bill to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide. The vote was 308-117.

The legislation, titled the “Sunshine Protection Act of 2025,” would eliminate the twice-yearly clock changes, though states would retain the option to opt out.

This measure has garnered support from President Donald Trump. A statement of administration policy noted that the legislation "represents a popular, common-sense reform and would benefit Americans by protecting precious daylight during the evening, when people are most likely to be awake and active."

House Energy and Commerce Chairman Brett Guthrie advocated for the bill on the House floor, stating, "The Sunshine Protection Act shifts one hour of sunlight from the beginning to the end of the day in the winter."

The bill's fate in the Senate remains uncertain. A similar version of the legislation passed the Senate in 2022 but did not advance in the House. Following the vote, Speaker Pro Tempore Rep. Scott DeJarlais played a portion of The Beatles' song “Here Comes the Sun” from his phone.
