The House Ways and Means Committee issued subpoenas Wednesday to three left-leaning nonprofits as part of an ongoing investigation into the network of Neville Roy Singham, a Shanghai-based millionaire described as a Marxist. The committee is examining $39 million in disbursements from Singham to the People’s Forum, the media outlet BreakThrough News, and the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research.
Chairman Jason Smith (R-Mo.) stated that the targeted groups have not provided adequate documentation in response to previous requests for information. "Your responses have failed to include a single responsive document and misrepresented both the scope and purpose of the Committee’s oversight," Smith wrote in a letter to the organizations. "Accordingly, the Committee is invoking compulsory process to obtain the requested materials."
The committee's probe is focused on concerns that Singham's network may be involved in money laundering, disseminating Communist propaganda, and promoting political violence. The subpoenas compel the organizations to provide requested materials.
In one instance cited by the committee, a group called Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) posted images on Instagram promoting a fundraiser and learning seminar titled "The First Intifada and Mass Organizing." The event was slated to be held at the People's Forum.
