House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has issued a criminal referral for former special counsel Jack Smith, alleging he made willfully false statements during a deposition before Congress in December.

In a letter to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Jordan stated that the committee has found "strong evidence" suggesting Smith knowingly provided false testimony. Lawyers for Smith did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The referral comes after Smith's testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. Top Democrat on the committee, Rep. Jamie Raskin, criticized the referral, calling it "baseless" and "vindictive."
