House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., has sharply criticized progressive Democratic candidates, likening them to "hair tonic salesmen" peddling false promises.
Emmer specifically targeted Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, arguing that their socialist-aligned platforms offer unrealistic solutions to the struggles faced by young Americans. He suggested these candidates are selling a vision similar to that offered to Pinocchio, which ultimately leads to negative consequences.
"Unfortunately, you've got these hair tonic salesmen like [Abdul El-Sayed] and [Zohran Mamdani] that are selling them literally the same thing that Pinocchio was sold when he was taken to the island, that you're going to get everything and of course everybody turns into a donkey," Emmer told Fox News Digital.
The Republican lawmaker pointed to a perceived surge of far-left candidates in primary elections across the country, a trend he believes is being fueled by groups like the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Emmer asserted that these candidates are farther left than the general electorate is comfortable with, providing fodder for Republicans seeking to retain control of Congress.
"It's never worked anywhere else in the world in history. Their way doesn't work. Unfortunately, we got a lot of young people who have been done a disservice with the education. They may have to learn this firsthand," Emmer stated, referencing the economic challenges faced by younger generations.
Emmer suggested that while young Americans are experiencing frustration due to economic pressures, the socialist left is proposing untenable solutions. He contrasted their ideology with the principles of capitalism, emphasizing incentives and individual achievement.
"There are challenges in this country that we cannot ignore, right? People are struggling to make ends meet. This generation has more bills than any generation before them, because of their cell phones and the streaming services and all the things that they have that they have to deal with every day," Emmer said.
Candidates linked to the DSA have seen success in recent primaries, defeating establishment Democrats in New York, Colorado, and Michigan, with several poised to enter the House of Representatives. El-Sayed, while denying he is a Democratic socialist, has aligned with and received backing from prominent figures within the organization. Mamdani is a registered DSA member.
Emmer invoked the communist ideal popularized by Karl Marx, "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs," to criticize the socialist vision of a future without capitalism, where work is done only as much as is needed. He argued that such systems have historically proven unsuccessful.
"There is nothing democratic about socialism," Emmer concluded.
