House GOP Chair Identifies Single Question for Midterm Voters

House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Lisa McClain has distilled the upcoming midterm elections to a single question for voters: who holds the keys to decision-making – Washington or the American people? McClain contends that Republican policies enacted over the past 20 months have prioritized returning power and control to individuals.

In an opinion piece, McClain highlighted the Republican-led tax cuts under the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," stating that these cuts returned over $82 billion in individual tax relief, with 97% of filers receiving a larger tax cut. She contrasted this with the Democratic Party's opposition to the bill, framing it as a fundamental disagreement on who should control taxpayer money. "We think you should," McClain stated.

Beyond fiscal policy, McClain emphasized the Republican commitment to border security, citing a 16-month period without any illegal immigrants being released into the country. This, she argued, is a reversal from previous "catch-and-release" policies that she claims led to an influx of undocumented immigrants. "That is government doing what only government can do," she asserted.

The reduction of federal regulations was also presented as a key accomplishment. Republicans used the Congressional Review Act to eliminate 23 federal regulations, which McClain argued has lowered costs for consumers and businesses, leaving more decision-making in the hands of Americans.

McClain also pointed to policies affecting families and education, noting that federally funded schools are now required to obtain parental consent before making changes related to a child's gender identity. This measure, she stated, passed with bipartisan support, allowing parents to be more involved in their children's schooling. Additionally, she credited Republican actions with a reported 9.3% decrease in violent crime and an 18.1% drop in murder rates in 2025.

McClain warned that these positive trends could be reversed if Republicans lose their congressional majority. She expressed concern that Democrats would pursue policies such as defunding the police and releasing violent criminals. "When they say they want to free violent criminals to roam the streets of our communities, believe them," she stated.

She urged voters to consider the current state of affairs – a secure border, increased take-home pay, parental involvement in schools, and reduced crime – as evidence of the Republican approach. McClain concluded that Republicans have created a government that fulfills its responsibilities while allowing Americans the freedom to manage their own affairs, ultimately arguing that "Americans were" meant to hold the keys, not Washington.
