The House Ethics Committee has launched a formal investigation into Democratic Congressman Jimmy Gomez, examining allegations of sexual misconduct involving a House staffer. The committee announced Monday that it is reviewing whether Gomez may have violated the House's Code of Official Conduct or other standards.
This probe appears to encompass more than a prior controversy where Gomez was reportedly seen kissing a congressional aide at a 2023 gathering. According to initial reports, the aide, who worked for a different congressional office and was approximately two decades younger than Gomez, was seated on a car hood at the time of the incident. Sources indicated that the Ethics Committee began gathering information after this event was reported and subsequently became aware of additional misconduct allegations concerning the congressman.
In June, Gomez acknowledged making "personal mistakes" outside of his marriage that caused "real pain" to his wife and family. He stated at the time that his actions were consensual and did not violate any laws or House ethics rules, but stressed that this did not diminish the impact on his loved ones.
Gomez issued a statement on Monday, again admitting to mistakes made years prior outside his marriage and accepting responsibility for the pain caused. He reiterated that the relationships were consensual and, to his knowledge, lawful and compliant with House ethics rules. He emphasized his ongoing private efforts with his wife and family to address the hurt and noted seeking professional help to mend his relationships.
"I have and continue to sincerely apologize to my family, friends, and the people that I have the privilege to serve," Gomez stated. "I am deeply sorry to my wife for the pain and embarrassment that I have brought into our lives. Her sacrifices and support are central to my ability to serve, and I can only feel gratitude for her grace and strength."
The California representative said he is "fully prepared to cooperate" with the Ethics Committee and provide any requested information. He concluded by stating he would not comment further publicly out of respect for his family and the ongoing inquiry.
The investigation comes as lawmakers are considering new ethics rules that could prohibit members of Congress from having romantic relationships with any congressional aides, a move that would address a potential loophole in existing regulations.
Gomez is expected to seek reelection in November against fellow Democrat Angela Gonzales-Torres. He secured 46% of the vote in the June 2 primary compared to Gonzales-Torres' 31%, and his district's strong Democratic leaning suggests he is not facing a significant re-election challenge.
