House Democrats Help Republicans Block Trump Impeachment Effort

A significant number of House Democrats voted to help Republicans defeat an impeachment effort against President Donald Trump on Tuesday. The resolution, introduced by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, sought to impeach Trump over the killing of two U.S. citizens by federal immigration officials.

The House voted to table the measure, a procedural move that effectively dismissed the impeachment resolution without a direct vote on its substance. This action highlighted a division within the Democratic caucus, as party leaders have largely focused on their efforts to regain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections rather than pursuing impeachment.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and other top Democratic leaders voted "present" on the resolution. This tactic allowed them to avoid taking an explicit stance on impeachment while making it easier for Republicans to dispose of the measure. Jeffries stated that impeachment "traditionally requires a comprehensive investigative process, the collection and review of thousands of documents, an exacting scrutiny of the facts, the examination of dozens of key witnesses, congressional hearings, sustained public organizing and the marshaling of the forces of democracy to build a broad national consensus."

Senior House Democratic leadership echoed this sentiment, arguing that "none of that serious work has been done, with the Republican majority focused solely on rubber-stamping Donald Trump’s extreme agenda." They indicated a continued commitment to holding "crooks accountable using every tool available to us beginning on day one."

However, Rep. Green criticized Democrats who did not vote to impeach Trump, stating, "They will acknowledge that what the president is doing is impeachable, but they would have us wait. Well, the Constitution doesn't have a wait clause in it." He expressed concern that some lawmakers might vote to protect the president, either by tabling the resolution or sending it to committee for further investigation.

This was not the first time Green has forced a vote on impeaching Trump. In June 2025, a similar resolution led to 128 Democrats joining Republicans in voting to table it. This latest effort by Green might also be among his last in Congress, as he was among several incumbent Democrats who lost their primary races.
