Hotelier Warns of 'Disaster' if Labour Raises Minimum Wage for Young Workers
Alex Polizzi of 'The Hotel Inspector' says a proposed increase in the minimum wage for 18-year-olds could prevent businesses from hiring them.
A prominent British hotelier has expressed strong concerns that a proposed increase in the minimum wage for 18-year-olds could lead to negative consequences for the hospitality sector. Alex Polizzi, known for her role in the television show 'The Hotel Inspector,' stated in an interview with The Telegraph's Travel Expert podcast that the Labour party's plan to raise the minimum wage for 18-year-olds to the same level as those aged 21 and older would be "another disaster."
Polizzi argued that such a change would make it financially unviable for businesses to hire young staff. "As far as I'm concerned, I will never be able to employ an 18-year-old again, because why would you employ someone fresh out of school at the same price as someone who has been out in the world for three years?" she said.
The Labour Government's manifesto included a pledge to examine the disparity between the National Minimum Wage for 18-20 year olds and the National Living Wage. The aim was to work towards a single adult wage rate in the future, rather than maintaining a lower rate for younger workers. However, critics suggest this could reduce employment opportunities for individuals in that age group.
Polizzi, whose hospitality ventures include The Star in East Sussex, Hotel Tresanton in Cornwall, and Hotel Endsleigh in Devon, shared her concerns amidst broader warnings about the fragility of the UK job market. Recent figures indicated that job vacancies have reached a 12-year low outside of the pandemic period. Official data also showed a decline in payroll numbers, with the decrease attributed in part to smaller businesses struggling with increased staff costs.
This economic backdrop has led to calls for the government to reconsider policies such as increases in employers' National Insurance contributions, alongside minimum wage hikes and expanded workers' rights, which some believe are hindering recruitment efforts.
