Charleston, South Carolina, a city steeped in history and known for its distinctive architecture and cuisine, is preparing for a significant influx of visitors as it celebrates America's 250th Anniversary. Among the prominent venues highlighting the city's appeal is Hotel Emeline, a historic property that recently completed a $25 million renovation. Charleston is recognized as one of four key cities, alongside Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City, marking this milestone due to its foundational role in American history.
Tourism is anticipated to surge in the coming months, driven not only by July 4th celebrations but also by events such as Bravo Fan Fest in October. In response, hotels like Emeline are offering specialized packages designed to showcase Southern hospitality. The hotel's "All-American Escape" package, for instance, includes experiences like a scenic helicopter tour over the Lowcountry and a sunset yacht charter on Charleston's harbor.
Originally constructed in 1852 as a mercantile building, the 212-room Hotel Emeline underwent a comprehensive renovation initiated in 2019. The $25 million project, backed by private investment firm Rockbridge and realized by the Makeready team and design studio Swoon, aimed to restore the space into a luxury boutique hotel. The official reopening occurred on July 1, 2020, unveiling its amenities, which include the Italian eatery Frannie & The Fox, the cocktail bar The Den, the café Clerks Coffee Co., and the retail space Keep Shop.
Frannie & The Fox, under the leadership of Chef Daniel Dalton, specializes in wood-fired pizzas and shareable Italian dishes, with reservations often required due to its popularity. Guests can also enjoy amenities such as the courtyard and greenhouse, described as a social garden with seating and a fireplace, and a fitness center equipped with Life Fitness equipment, a Peloton bike, and free weights. Complimentary bike rentals are available for exploring the city, with nearby attractions including Rainbow Row and the Charleston City Market.
While Hotel Emeline does not have a pool on-site, guests have access to the outdoor pool at its sister property, The Ryder Hotel, a short walk away.
The hotel's guest rooms feature an emerald and gold theme, incorporating contemporary touches such as high-quality linens, spa robes, custom turntables, locally made ceramic accessories, and signature bath products. Each room is equipped with king-sized beds.
Hotel Emeline's central location provides easy access to the Charleston City Market, The Museum at Market Hall, and numerous restaurants and shops. The hotel has received accolades, including an award at the Good Housekeeping's 2026 Travel Awards and recognition from Modern South. It is also a finalist in The Post and Courier's Charleston's Choice Awards.
Celebrity endorsements have also contributed to the hotel's profile. Craig Conover of Bravo's "Southern Charm" collaborated with Hotel Emeline for a holiday suite inspired by his store's Nutcracker collection. Luann de Lesseps, an alum of "The Real Housewives of New York City," has also praised the hotel during her stays.
Kevin Herbst, Area Managing Director for Emeline and The Ryder Hotel, stated that the hotel is focused on delivering an exceptional guest experience while preserving its unique character. He noted that Charleston's busiest travel seasons are typically spring and fall, coinciding with mild weather and a vibrant events calendar, with holiday periods also being particularly popular.
Herbst emphasized Hotel Emeline's role as a gateway to Charleston's history, offering guests an immersive experience that connects them with the city's past during this significant anniversary year.
