Hostage Standoff Ends in Fatal Police Shooting at California Assisted Living Facility

A hostage standoff at a California assisted living facility concluded with a fatal police shooting after officers attempted to negotiate with a gunman holding two people captive. The incident occurred on July 24 at an Aegis Living facility in Fremont.

Newly released bodycam and witness footage depicts the tense situation as officers pleaded with the armed man, identified as 62-year-old Edward Francis Oliver, to surrender. The confrontation escalated when Oliver allegedly threatened one of the hostages with what appeared to be a handgun.

"We need you to communicate, can you please put the gun down? I do not want to shoot you. Do you hear me?" an officer is heard saying in the video. Despite repeated attempts to de-escalate, the situation intensified, with officers warning Oliver, "Dude, you're going to get shot."

Video captures an officer shouting, "Dude, put the gun down! He's got a gun pointing straight at her!" before multiple shots were fired. The gunfire prompted officers to rush into the room.

Investigators stated that Oliver was pointing a firearm at a victim before turning it toward responding officers. However, the weapon was later identified as an airsoft gun.

Following the shooting, officers entered the room, secured the scene, and provided medical aid to Oliver. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Miraculously, the two hostages were unharmed.

A spokesperson for Aegis Living indicated that the incident stemmed from a family dispute, though further details were not provided. Authorities have not yet disclosed the relationship between Oliver and the hostages.

The Fremont Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal police shooting.
