Hourly parking charges at several hospitals in Essex have increased by approximately 50%, a move that began on July 31st and has drawn criticism from patients who describe the existing parking situation as difficult.
Rosalind Wright, a 39-year-old who has had two children at Broomfield Hospital, stated that parking was already a "nightmare" before the price hike. She estimated spending between £50 and £100 on parking for about 10 appointments, including scans, vaccinations, and blood tests. Wright found the initial 20 minutes of free parking insufficient, noting that appointments are often delayed, leading to longer parking durations for what are typically brief visits.
Some nearby residents have resorted to renting out their driveways to hospital visitors. The platform JustPark reported that 35 parking spaces were listed within 2 kilometers of Broomfield Hospital, with six located within 500 meters. The average daily rate for these private spaces is £6.15, compared to an average of £4.52 for parking elsewhere in Chelmsford.
Natasha Kerrigan, chief estates and infrastructure officer for the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (MSENFT), acknowledged that this is the first price increase in three years. She highlighted that certain individuals would continue to receive free parking, including patients undergoing chemotherapy, those visiting patients at the end of their lives, birthing partners, carers for patients with dementia, and Blue Badge holders. Kerrigan stated, "We recognise that any increase in charges is unwelcome, but the costs associated with operating and maintaining our car parks have increased."
