Homeless Encampment Discovered Atop Los Angeles Bus Shelter
The unusual setup in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood has drawn attention from city officials and highlights ongoing homelessness challenges.
An unusual homeless encampment, complete with a shopping cart and personal belongings, was discovered atop a bus stop shelter in the affluent Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. The regularly used bus stop is situated near the busy intersection of S. Barrington Ave. and Wilshire Blvd.
A spokesperson for Councilmember Traci Park confirmed that a homeless outreach worker was dispatched to the location to assess the situation, and city workers were also observed at the site. Metro, the public transit agency, stated that most bus stops in Los Angeles are owned and maintained by the city and that Metro does not have jurisdiction over them.
This discovery comes as Los Angeles grapples with its persistent homelessness crisis. The city has allocated significant resources to address the issue, including the Inside Safe program, which has reportedly spent $300 million since 2022. However, analyses indicate that approximately 40% of individuals housed through this program have later returned to homelessness.
According to the city's latest count, Los Angeles is home to about 45,000 individuals experiencing homelessness, part of a larger statewide figure of approximately 187,000. The city has seen other reports of individuals living in encampments in various public spaces, including storm drains near the 110 Freeway.
